How to Get to Cape Coast

Cape Coast is well-connected to nearby cities by road and is easy to reach whether you’re flying into Takoradi or Accra. Here are the main travel options:

By Road from Accra (3 hours):
Cape Coast is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Accra (approximately 150 km) via the N1 highway. It’s a scenic coastal route that passes through towns like Winneba and Mankessim. You can drive yourself, hire a private car, or arrange for a guided transfer.

By Road from Takoradi (1.5 hours):
Takoradi is even closer — about 1.5 hours away by car (around 80 km). This is the shortest and most direct route if you’re flying into the Takoradi Airport (TKD), which is the nearest airport to Cape Coast. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or arrange pickup with your accommodation.

By Intercity Bus (VIP, STC, Metro Mass):
Air-conditioned long-distance buses run daily from both Accra and Takoradi. VIP and STC are the most popular options, offering comfort and reliability. Buses from Accra depart from major stations like Circle and Kaneshie.

By Shared Taxi or Tro-Tro:
For budget travelers, shared taxis and tro-tros (local minibuses) are available from major transit yards in Accra, Takoradi, and Kumasi. These are more affordable but less comfortable and can be unpredictable.

Nearest Airports:

  • Takoradi Airport (TKD) – Approx. 1.5 hours to Cape Coast by road
  • Kotoka International Airport (ACC), Accra – Approx. 3 hours to Cape Coast by road

Travel Tip:
If you’re flying in from within Ghana, Takoradi Airport is your most convenient option. For international travelers, flying into Accra and continuing by road is the most common route.
